answer? Discover the shocking diseases that smoking causes in this
report.
The fact that smoking causes immense harm to your health is well
known, but exactly what diseases can occur as a result of smoking?
Lets have a look in detail at the most dangerous diseases caused.
Cancer
Toxic chemicals in cigarettes come into contact with cells in the
body, in particular, those in the mouth, throat and lungs. This
causes cell mutation and in some cases cells carry on growing when
they're supposed to stop. This is a cancerous cell. This can happen
to anyone, but smokers risk a much higher chance of developing
certain types of cancer.
Below are the most common types of cancer caused by smoking.
Mouth cancer: Not as common in cigarette smokers as in cigar
smoker but still carries a much higher risk than to a non-smoker.
Throat cancer: Very painful cancer and difficult to remove.
Lung cancer: The most common type of cancer in smokers, 90%
of lung cancer cases are due to smoking. A non smoker has a 1 in 200
chance of getting lung cancer, a moderate smoker has a 1 in 10
chance and a heavy smoker has a 1 in 5 chance.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
COPD; a collective term for a group of conditions that block airflow
and make breathing more difficult. A process which is sped up by
smoking.
The two most common types are,
Emphysema: Breathlessness caused by damage to the air sacs
(alveoli). Contents of cigarettes stick to the air sacs causing
damage.
Chronic bronchitis: Inflammatory condition in the lungs that
causes respiratory passages to be irritated and swollen, mucus
production increases and may damage the lungs.
Vascular disease
Diseases caused by hardening of the arteries, arteries harden due to
thickening of the lining, from fatty deposits. Smoking's a major
contributor of fatty deposits in the arteries.
The most common types of vascular disease are,
Cardiovascular disease (the heart): Cholesterol builds up in
the arteries near the heart making it more difficult for blood to
enter and exit the heart, can cause heart attacks.
Cerebrovascular disease (the brain): Narrowed arteries in the
brain can become blocked by clots, can cause strokes or paralysis.
Peripheral vascular disease (the legs): Lack of blood flow
through the legs causes cramping pains. In serious cases it can lead
to gangrene in the toes and feet which may have to be amputated.
That answers the question - what kind of diseases can you get from
smoking. If you're a smoker now may be the time to start giving up.
