Addictions are stored in the subconscious mind making them very hard to overcome.

When trying to give up smoking with will power you're using the conscious part of your mind to try and over power the addiction in the subconscious part of your mind. this causes stress and withdrawal symptoms. To overcome these many people comfort eat and consequently gain weight.

You'll have to go through a lot of stress and you may end up putting on weight. It will be worth it in the end but the problem is in the meantime. The time between when you stop smoking and when you don't even want another one, the hard bit.
