The effects of smoking

Interested in the effects of smoking? Discover what you know and don't know about smoking effects in this report.

It's no secret that smoking causes dangerous health effects. But what exactly are they?

Lets have a look in detail, you may already know most of this however I advise you to read on because there could be an number of things don't know or never considered.

Coughs and Colds: Cigarettes contain over 4000 chemical compounds and at least 10% of them are toxic. When these toxic fumes get inhaled into the lungs they cause damage to the structure allowing bacteria to enter and cause coughs. These chemicals also get into the blood stream damaging the immune system thus making the smoker susceptible to viruses such as colds.

High cholesterol: Nicotine in cigarettes causes hardening of the arteries.

Cardiovascular disease: Increased cholesterol means blood flow to the heart becomes constricted causing heart disease, kills over 30,000 a year in the UK alone.

Cancer: Toxic substances in cigarettes can cause mutation of the cells in lungs, mouth or throat which may cause cancer, kills over 40,000 year in the UK.

These are the main causes of death from smoking and here's a list of some of the other potential smoking risks.

  • Kidney failure

  • Emphysema - damage to the air sacs in the lungs

  • High blood pressure

  • Infertility - in both genders

  • Increased risk of cataracts

  • Stained teeth and gums

  • Paler skin and wrinkles

  • Contributes to developing mouth ulcers

  • Impotence

But even if smoking didn't present any of these risks and cost nothing to buy there's still another powerful negative effect that no one ever considers. Psychological damage, always taken for granted but still causes immense harm.

Smoking is ADDICTIVE. Any addiction psychologically harms people because it takes away self control, this can lead to problems such as

  • Depression

  • Poor decision making

  • Feeling of emptiness

  • Denial - that you aren't addicted

  • Stress

I hope you can see now the smoking is dangerous whatever way you look at it. If you are a smoker don't beat yourself up but do something about it.
