Thinking of trying to quit smoking cold turkey? Find out exactly
what to expect in this report.
Everyone knows what harm smoking does to them, but for some reason
giving up smoking's not as easy as it looks.
Why is this?
Because when the smoking started (however long ago), nicotine
started being ingested (along with other chemicals). The
subconscious part of the brain (which stores habits) becomes altered
into craving more and more nicotine.
Giving up smoking means, that the brain becomes deprived of
nicotine. Not technically harmful but
will constantly tell you, you need more, causing withdrawal symptoms
and stress. In order to succeed to quit smoking cold turkey,
willpower must be used to fight off any of these cigarette cravings.
Unfortunately willpower's a product of the conscious part of the
mind, which is much smaller in size than the subconscious and
therefore, has less of an influence over your decision making.
Using the cold turkey method means setting the two parts of the mind
against each other. The conscious part saying "you mustn't smoke",
and the subconscious saying "you need to smoke". A stressful time
and only if willpower is strong enough (which it rarely is), is it
possible for the subconscious to give in. Normally Willpower gives
in.
Other factors can also get in the way when trying to give up
smoking.
Outside stresses
Bad days
Other people putting on pressure
Depression
These can all play a part in destroying willpower, and force the
smoking to continue. Don't be fooled by the common tricks that
addictions play on you. These can include making you think that
you're not addicted to smoking and you could give up any time you
wanted. Unless you can stop smoking completely for a whole month
then you do have an addiction to cigarettes.
In
conclusion, giving up smoking cold turkey is possible but very
difficult.
