What is a nicotine addiction? How do
you tell if you have one? Do you need to overcome it? Find out in
this article.
An addiction: A
dependence on a substance or activity meaning that the individual
cannot function properly without it. Obviously in this case a
dependence on nicotine. Stored in the subconscious parts of the
brain an addiction is very powerful. The reason why it's so hard to
give up smoking is that your subconscious is continuously telling
you that you need more.
When trying to give up, willpower comes
into play. Willpower is an aspect of the conscious mind. If the
conscious and subconscious minds are contradicting each other then
the individual becomes stressed and frustrated. The subconscious is
much bigger than the conscious therefore normally wins in the end,
so the smoking continues.
Most smokers justify their addictions
by saying to themselves something like:
"I could stop if I wanted to, I just
don't." or "I don't have an addiction, I just like doing it."
Its a trick that addictions play on
people, convincing them that they're in control of everything when
really the addiction is.
The simple test for a nicotine
addiction is this:
Don't smoke another cigarette for a
month.
If you can do that, then you don't have
this addiction and the best advice is never put one in your mouth
again, that way your guaranteed never to develop one. If you can't
then unfortunately you ARE addicted to smoking no matter how many or
how few you smoke in a day.
As well as all the physical effects
smoking causes, the fact that it's an addiction means that it also
causes psychological harm. i.e. takes away a huge amount of self
control from you.
It can be lived with but would be wise
to overcome in order to regain control over your life and not have
to worry about it damaging your health anymore.
