What
are the best methods to quit cigarettes? This report uncovers the
ways to give up smoking and more importantly which work best.
Lets face
it virtually every smoker wants to give up smoking. It's no secret
that it causes much more harm than good. You already know what harm
it can do to you, but just to remind you.
Bad Breath
Higher risk of lung cancer
Higher risk of mouth cancer
Higher risk of throat cancer
More coughs and colds
Higher cholesterol levels
Lower fitness levels
Skin damage
Big dent in bank balance every year
Of course that's not news to you. They
told you this at school, it's advertised on the TV and everywhere
else. Nobody wants any of the above but however many reasons to stop
smoking it just never seems to be enough.
Why aren't these reasons enough and how
does one quit smoking?
Reasoning is just a logical process
which the conscious part of your mind takes care of. In simple terms
the mind consists of two parts, the conscious and subconscious
parts. Habits form in the subconscious part of the mind which is why
people do things without thinking about them.
Smoking is more than a bad habit, it's
an addiction which means that the habit is so well programmed into
the subconscious that withdrawal is very difficult. That's the
reason giving up smoking is so hard. It's stored deep in the
subconscious mind and constantly tells the brain to carry on
smoking.
To give up smoking this deep desire to
smoke must be removed from the subconscious. But how is this done?
Lets take a look at some of the main
methods people use to stop smoking.
Method 1: Giving up slowly
Reducing the number of cigarettes
smoked each day over time. The idea being trying to trick your
subconscious into thinking its getting enough until it doesn't need
any at all.
Sounds great in theory but problems get
in the way.
Most people have a goal of how many the
plan to reduce by, in a certain amount of time, say one a day. But
this proves too hard so it becomes one a week, still too hard so now
one a month, one a year. They start getting impatient and just give
up.
Has worked for some people but not
many. May be worth giving it a try but don't kid yourself that your
making progress if your constantly slowing down.
Method 2: Giving up completely
straight away (going cold turkey)
Just cutting them out straight away.
Using your own willpower to fight the addiction so it gives in any
doesn't bother getting you to smoke anymore.
Is this possible? Yes.
But likely? Definitely not.
Why? Willpower is a conscious thought,
the addiction is subconscious. Giving up straight away means a
battle goes on between the two parts of the mind. This causes stress
and withdrawal symptoms, in fact many people comfort eat to hide
these problems and put on weight.
As for getting the subconscious to give
in, it's much more likely that your willpower gives in because of
the difference in size.
Only try this way if you have a very
strong will.
Method 3: Nicotine Patches
Heavily advertised on TV, but how good
are they really?
Nicotine is the addictive substance in
cigarettes, the idea of the patches is to replace these nicotine
cravings and reducing the need for them over time. (similar to
cutting down slowly).
Many have reported them to be
completely ineffective. In any case all they can do is replace the
addiction, they don't get to the route of the problem. They also end
up costing a lot of money.
Not a recommended way to go.
Method 4: Hypnosis
Talking directly to the subconscious
part of the mind and get rid of the addiction without using
willpower.
Not many people even think of this way
because they don't know what it is. For those who know why giving up
smoking is so hard (which this article tells you) hypnosis is the
holy grail.
Just getting rid of a smoking addiction
without the stress or withdrawal symptoms and not even having to
think about it.
Recommended for anyone who is prepared
to relax and listen to a recording for a short amount of time each
day.
