Want to know about the long term health effects of smoking? Learn
the terrible truth about the irreversible effects of smoking in this
report.
It's a well known fact that smoking increases the risk of cancer,
it's also a fact that giving up smoking will reduce the risk of
cancer over time.
But what about the damage that smoking does, that can never be
undone, even after giving up. The most severe long term effect of
smoking is Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
This causes many deaths to smokers every year (though not as much as
cancer or cardiovascular disease). It does happen to be one of the
slowest deaths in that it's a slowly deteriorating condition.
The two most common types of COPD are emphysema and Chronic
bronchitis.
Emphysema
Breathlessness caused by damage to the air sacs (alveoli). The
chemicals in cigarettes stick to the air sacks in the lungs making
them less able to absorb the oxygen.
Chronic bronchitis
Smoking causes an increase in the amount of mucus produced. This
causes irritation and swelling to the respiratory passages.
How do you tell if you've got chronic bronchitis?
Lots of Coughing
Shortness of breath
Thick sputum, difficult to cough up
These are possible signs but only a doctor can tell for sure.
What can you do if you have Chronic bronchitis?
Unfortunately the damage is permanent but there are many things you
can do to limit any further damage.
Exercise
Quit smoking - it's never to late (see end of article for help in
giving up smoking)
Get any infections in the respiratory channel treated
Avoid passive smoking - easier now with the public smoking ban
What should you do if you don't have Chronic bronchitis but still
smoke?
Stop smoking to reduce the effects (COPD occurs in everybody
eventually but smoking greatly speeds it up).
How do you stop smoking?
There are many different ways but most of them are very hard.
Is there an easy way to quit smoking?
