What Chemicals do you think cigarettes contain? Well amongst

lung are the most affected) they cause mutations, this means that
the cell's DNA gets altered. The more cigarettes smoked, the more
cells get mutated.
One particular Gene in the cell's DNA controls the way the cell
grows, in that it should continue to grow until its reached it's
optimal size. If this gene gets altered in such a way that it no
longer stops growing then it becomes a cancerous cell.
Of course this can still occur in non-smokers, and may not always
happen to smokers but it's all to do with risk.
Fact: 90% of lung cancer cases are due to smoking.
Fact: Cancer causes 42,800 of the 114,000 smoking deaths each
year.
Cardiovascular disease
Cholesterol and other fats become deposited in the arteries, this
leaves them narrow or even blocked. Blood clots form as a result.
Blood clots in the heart and the brain are the most common causes of
sudden death.
Coronary thrombosis: when blood clots occur in the arteries
supplying the heart. Can lead to a heart attack.
Cerebral thrombosis: when blood clots form in the vessels to
the brain. Can lead to strokes and paralysis.
Fact: Cardiovascular disease kills 30,600 smokers every year.
There are many other harmful health effects of smoking, needless to
say they're not pleasant.
